Gathering

In Gathering I Mullen creates abstract, organic forms that convey a

gathering of beings coming together.

Gathering II explores the experiential qualities of form through

abstraction. I think of the forms as individual entities, conveyors of an

emotional sensibility. With these separate entities, I create multiples,

groupings, a collective. In Gathering II, the original pieces are modeled in

clay, including in each, a hole for my species to breathe and a heart of

sorts, a place of light within their center. Rubber molds of the original

clay forms were made, and duplicates were cast in a translucent resin.

Incorporating light, the sculpture evokes beings striving to come

together, despite arduous challenges, addressing both the strength and

vulnerability of the human condition.
